Dems to attack Alito's credibility at hearings

Senate Democrats signaled yesterday they intend to pursue a two-punch attack in confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito this week, criticizing his conservative judicial philosophy as extreme while questioning his credibility as uncertain.

Republicans, meanwhile, indicated they will respond by emphasizing Alito's credentials -- his 15 years as an appellate judge and his unanimous top American Bar Association rating -- while attacking Alito's critics as the ones who are really out of the legal mainstream.
