News From Iraq


-A group of Shiite pilgrims enroute to attend an major ceremony were attacked by unidentified gunmen in northern Baghdad Friday night, leaving seven people killed, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua. DETAILS

-A soldier with the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell has been seriously wounded in a bombing in Iraq. DETAILS

The British military base near Amarah, some 380 kilometres south of Baghdad, came under mortar fire Friday morning, Iraqi security sources said. DETAILS

-The Iraqi government announced a two-day vehicle ban in parts of Baghdad starting on Friday night as thousands of Shi'ites converged on the capital to mark the martyrdom of a revered 8th century Imam. DETAILS

-Turkey and Iran have dispatched tanks, artillery and thousands of troops to their frontiers with Iraq during the past few weeks in what appears to be a coordinated effort to disrupt the activities of Kurdish rebel bases.
