There were 44 combat deaths in Iraq the first 6 mos of this year, there were 35 murders in Detroit in January alone. Conclusion: we should withdraw police from Detroit because they are helpless and that the good people there don't deserve a chance?

This is not a good analogy - you're comparing apples and oranges my friend. But to address the 35 murders in Detroit --- some of those billions of dollars being thrown away in Iraq could go a long way in Detroit!
