Why Protesters Are Patriots

From one of the reddest states in the country, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson tells thousands of Utah protesters why questioning the Iraq war is the heart of patriotism. The ripple has started.

On the eve of a visit by the President, Salt Lake City Mayor, Rocky Anderson, lead a protest against the Bush's Iraq war policies. Utah is considered to be the "reddest" state, showing that there is growing debate about the Iraq war even in friendly Bush territory.

The Utah Republican Party initiated a radio campaign, urging listeners to call-in and complain about Mayor Anderson's participation in the anti-Bush protest. The radio spot criticized the mayor for wanting to "cut and run" in Iraq. On some stations, the advertisement was broadcast 20 times per day. The mayor reports that there were many negative calls generated by the Republican Party's radio campaign. But the mayor also said, there were also many calls supporting the his participation in the protest.

Organizers put the crowd size at 4000 to 5000.

HUH? Talk about your less than cogent argument!!!!! I've heard no one say terrorists should not be stopped. We're fighting the wrong war - Iraq is a lie...your boy George has said Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 --- so I am not understanding your point which seems like some drug or alcohol induced diatribe! The stress you write about on your own site is really getting to you.

eaprez,

Sorry, it is you that is the liar, we are in Iraq to remove a dictator from power and to give 25 million people the right decide who will run their country. You really need to stop believing every lie that is told to you by the Democrats and MSM.

Protests are fine, but when they are organized by people for political gain and to embarrass the President is absolutely dispicable.

First of all Jon, I did not call anyone a liar and if you resort to name calling again your posts will be removed. That's what your side usually does when the facts don't support their beliefs - they resort to name calling. Iraq is based on a lie and you are simply misinformed.

Secondly you either have a bad memory or convieniently chose to forget or ignore that we did NOT go to Iraq to remove a dictator from power. We went to Iraq because according to the president - he posed an imminent threat. The president and the VP and others in the administration told us and the world that Iraq could and would launch chemical weapons to our borders. I guess the fact that Iraq didn't have the MEANS to do so since they didn't have any ICBM's escaped the thought process of most people - BUT that is how I immediately knew it was a lie. In addition, we were then told if we didn't take them out there was the possibiliy of nuclear weapons being launched from Iraq. Also not true. Now you can cling to those beliefs if you want however the White House did admit that it was wrong to put the infamous 16 words about nuclear capablity into the State of the Union Address. You my friend need to stop watching FNN. Polling data has shown that those who get their news about FNN hold beliefs that are factually incorrect.

25 million Iraqi's absolutely have the right to decide their own destiny - which is why we should leave. We are occupiers. The so called insurgents are Iraqi citizens fighting against our occupation. We have killed far more Iraqi's than Sadam did.

This is the United States. We have the right to protest. If the President is embarrassed because people disagree with his policies then he shouldn't be president. What he should be embarrased about is the mess he's created in Iraq!!!

Thanks for playing!

I have been repeatedly amazed and impressed with Mayor Anderson's ability to not only speak to these issues without pulling any punches, without resorting to euphemism, but also to speak so calmy and civilly. It is not only uplifting but very very refreshing to see such candor wedded to such 'unflappability.'
