Not Another War
I don't know about you, but I am astonished at the reports of a possible United States attack on Iran. It is said that just before the Bay of Pigs fiasco in April 1961, newly elected President John F. Kennedy and his top advisers were given a briefing on the planned invasion of Cuba. A map of Cuba was overlaid on one of the United States. Those present gasped when they saw that Cuba stretched as far as Chicago is from New York. They did not realize how big the island was. President Kennedy decided it was unwise to undertake a full-scale war on Cuba.
I hope a similar briefing is conducted for President Bush and his advisers. If a map of Iraq is overlaid on one of Iran, those viewing it will learn Iran is three times the size of Iraq. Further, Iran's population is triple that of Iraq's. Presently, with some 140,000 troops and personnel in Iraq, the United States and its allies cannot control the country. How many soldiers would be needed to conquer Iran?
Let me say up front that I am no fan of the present regime in power in Teheran. The outrageous statements of hatred against Israel and denial of the reality of the Holocaust by the new President of Iran are despicable. I don't want Iran to have nuclear weapons. In fact, I don't want any country or group any where to have nuclear weapons or weapons of mass destruction. At the very least, I support a nuclear weapons free zone in the Middle East.
The United States in particular, but other countries as well, have flooded the region with weapons over the past half-century. This has to stop.
