Will a Trent Lott Retirement Hand Senate to Dems?
Trent Lott within the next week plans to decide between seeking a fourth term in the U.S. Senate from Mississippi or retiring from public life.
That could determine whether Republicans keep control of the Senate in next year's elections. For the longer range, Lott's retirement and replacement could signal that Southern political realignment has peaked and now is receding.

The best part of that article is the by-line. Artman may have reprinted the article, but take a good look at who wrote it.
I also posted earlier this month on how Novak, when he finally said something about the Plame outing, pointed a finger-- at George Bush.
Ironically, Robert Novak and Trent Lott share something. They are both conservatives, but have been burned by the lack of support from other conservatives.
Lott should retire-- but it's ironic that if he stays it will be to push for Katrina funding. And Lott did something that George W. Bush would never do-- after his home was blown down and FEMA screwed up, he said he "was wrong" when he pushed through the portion of the Homeland Security Agency bill that demoted FEMA to a department within the Homeland Security Agency. And Lott has had to suffer through the recent remarks by conservatives about how it 'isn't worth spending the money' to rebuild areas devastated by Katrina (although most of their wrath has been directed towards New Orleans, but to be sure the economic impact of a shrunken New Orleans would be felt region-wide.)
Funny how even the most hard core of conservative Republicans can mellow a little after they get to experience first hand some of the mean-spiritedness of their movement.
eli you have much more faith in folks than I do. I don't think Lott has mellowed. I think he's still angry and bitter about being asked to move aside and will do anything to exact a little payback on his own party. They eat their young ya know! ;) Hope your wife is alright.
