Lott Eyes Leadership Post

Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) said today that he plans to run for a leadership post next year, explaining that he has his sights set on the top job: majority leader.

But Lott also said that he has not made a final decision about running for re-election next year and said that he is considering his finances after losing his permanent residence, which was appraised at between $650,000 and $750,000, because of Hurricane Katrina.

"I'm looking at it seriously," Lott said of his possible retirement. "If I come back here, I'm going to run for a leadership position."

I've never liked Trent Lott in any way. And he deserved to get thrown out of the leadership two years ago.

But I will say this. He's honest.

After Katrina, he admitted that it was a mistake to have put FEMA under the Homeland Security Department, a move that he spearheaded through the Senate. A bigot, a stooge of the far right, a heartless scrooge, a tool in the pocket of big business, yes Trent Lott has been called, deservedly, all of these things. But at least he is willing to admit he made a mistake (maybe it took him losing his home to have to admit it), and that at least means he might be more open to reason than the leadership we have now.

Of course, regardless of whether he tries to come back or not, Senate Republicans will be needing new leadership next year. Majority leader Bill Frist is stepping down amid a growing scandal about a stock sale, and the number two man in the Republican leadership, Rick Santorum, is in serious trouble running for re-election in Pennsylvania.
