The most effective way to restrict democracy is to transfer decision-making from the public arena to unaccountable institutions: kings and princes, priestly castes, military juntas, party dictatorships, or modern corporations.
Unfortunalely Noam is correct about this. He is also correct in stating that corporations are anti-democratic. I agree with his analysis that we as a nation are giving far too much power to the corporate chieftain, in doing so we lose our essential fundamental right of protest and representation.
Egalitarianism is not just a novel idea, but it is credulity among our represenatives in Washington, and on many local levels.
But like Thom Hartman, I believe that Democracy is fixed in our DNA. I doubt that we will give too much to corporate interests, the facade that corporations are more efficient at serving the public is already diminshing.
Just off topic for a moment - one thing that really bothers me is how so many on the right try to pigeon hole me as anti-capatilist, simply because I believe that corporations are anti Democartic. This is usually a ruse to vilify my character. There is a difference in a Marxist and a person who believes in a regulated form of Capitalism - the latter is more in line with Democracy than lasse-fair capitalism.

Corporations are for one thing and one thing only --- sustaining the business by increasing their profit --- doesn't matter who pays.
